Remix and True Blood.

So my Remix is in. Done. Finished. I did make the mistake of acting quite smug last week, assuming I was safe because my fic was almost complete and I still had three days to go. I think the migraine was payback for being a cocky bitch.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it. It didn't end the way I expected it to at all, but it was just one of those fics that knew where it wanted to end up and it was going to damn well end up there, thank you very much. Who am I to argue? I don't know if I said all I wanted to say with it, but I don't think stretching it out would have allowed me to, to be honest. Maybe a sequel would. A shift in perspective and circumstance or time. But right now, I think it's good as it is.
I, on the other hand, do not feel good at all. I think the migraine was a symptom rather than a cause, because I feel damn right squiffy. I missed work yesterday, so I made myself go today because I refuse to be floored by a migraine for three days straight. I refuse. Although to be fair my migraine settled into a bearable headache yesterday afternoon. It's just my stomach, which is now protesting against the lack of solid foods over the past three days. Eating has not been fun the last few days.
Ugh. Just talking about food right now is making me nauseas. Must move on.
How about this?
Did anyone think this episode was weirdly shot? Or was it just me? I was still a little feverish and low on food when I watched this episode, so I would not be surprised if it was me. It just seemed like the sound and the music and the acting was knocked off-kilter. Not in a bad way, per se. Just like it was all playing on a different note than usual.
I just have to say, I'm loving the Bill and Jessica dynamic. I really am. I love that Jessica is calling Bill on his bullshit. I love that her vampirism is about becoming a woman, how it means taking control of her own sexuality and not letting anyone, not her father, not Bill, not even Hoyt, take control of it for her. When Bill informs Hoyt that it's not Jessica he's protecting, I wanted to punch him and kiss him. Because yes, you're right, Bill, Jessica does not need protecting. Not in that way. Not in that ugly, sheltered, sterile way she's been protected for so long, until her own sexuality became a dirty disease that you would catch if you talked about it. But at the same time, I knew this wasn't what he was really saying. He was really saying, Jessica is a vampire (woman) who cannot control her impulses (sexuality). She will destroy you (innocent boys) unless she's stopped (controlled).
And this is why I partly have a problem with Bill's character. His age is an excuse that is wearing thin when it comes to the power balance between him and most of the show's cast. I think that's why I like Eric so much. Because that bullshit does not sit well with Eric.
But I think I really liked this episode because in the end, though Hoyt ended up on the front porch with blue balls, Jessica wasn't punished for exploring her sexuality. It didn't turn out bad. She didn't kill him, he didn't find her fangs terrifying, and he also didn't act like a moronic fangbanger. And she giggles. And she's happy. And she's not ashamed of the fangs (her sexuality) anymore, because someone else has finally made her see that there's very little shame in it. The actress captured that so incredibly well. I swear she gets prettier and prettier with every passing episode.
And thank you, Sookie, for calling Bill on his bullshit, too. Yeah, take your self-hatred and shove it where the sun don't shine. Feel free to frollick around with your own honey, because you have earned that right after a century of being an angst-ridden git, but make sure you find someone else to shoulder that unbearable burden for you while you're having a good time. Because Jessica is a vampire and vampires don't have feelings, do they? Unless they've been awakened by a lovely, buxom blonde. Now that's a whole 'nother story.
Apart from Bill's godawful parenting skills, I found this episode incredibly amusing. And creepy. The airport scene, Sookie sloshed and overenthuasiastic, Jessica's inability to get out of her coffin... hilarious. And Jessica glamouring someone! Kickass!Jess! I want more of this. More of Bill being less ashamed of who he is, and in turn making Jessica less ashamed of who she is. I like that every now and again they still remind us that she is still a kid every now and again, that she still needs protecting in a way that all children do.
Eric was awesomesauce as usual. I can see bits of book!Eric coming through loud and clear, especially now the plot of the second book is kicking in. It's so an Eric thing to do to manipulate Lafayette because he's important to Sookie. Eric is a businessman. He knows where to apply the pressure, because he has to know where to apply the pressure. I love that right now you can't quite tell if he's doing this because he wants to use every option available to him to make sure Sookie keeps to her side of the bargain, or because he's genuinely fascinated with her by this point. By the second book, you know he has a little thing for her. But I've found that this Eric isn't as easily softened as book!Eric, so it looks like this will be something that will take a while to build.
Barry the Bellhop! How effin' epic!
I've been re-reading Living Dead in Dallas to remind myself of the plot, and now I'm really hoping that Ball doesn't stray too far from the plot. I mean, it isn't really all that good (I find Harris' plots to be one of the weaker things about her writing) but there are some great characters in there. I guess I'm just hoping he keeps some things the same or similar. I want to see more of Barry. And Stan the nerdy Dallas vamp. And the shapeshifters! And I wonder how they'll handle the whole Godric plotline, too.
But, anyway. I like where Ball is going with this season thus far. No complaints.
